A comment I made on the Slower Traffic Keep Right post below made me think of certain habits I have while driving, and the cause/lack thereof for them.

So, add your questionable driving behaviour below, so I can see if I do it, and try to reason it out/admit general assholery and submit to the will of oppo for punishment.

this should be interesting...

Are you an idiot?

Verily.

If someone slower is trying to merge into my lane directly in front of me, I will not let them in.

If they show competence, I will let them in. E.g. they take advantage of a slight gap I left and try to force their way in. If they do that, I’m usually fairly confident they won’t hold me up, so meh, come on in.

If they’re the timid sort, the kind that stops at the end of the merge until another idiot stops and lets them in, you can go behind me, thankyewverymuch.

If I pull up to a multi-way stop and there’s any hesitation at all from the cars who got there before me I’ll ignore right of way and just go. It’s not like I’m cutting people off, just taking what should have been their turn. It stems from my time delivering pizzas (faster you can get to the house and back the more orders you can take) but I find myself doing it during regular driving not necessarily out of habit, just because I get annoyed by the people who get in a “oh no, you can go!” standoff where we all just sit there waving each other on like idiots or have their nose in their phones.

I pass on the right or HOV if someone is hogging the left lane. And if the maneuver can be completed safely.

I do roughly the same thing... I wouldn’t say “any hesitation”, I give them a chance, but I know where you’re coming from. If you aren’t going to take your right of way, thanks, I’ll have that.

It’s pretty binary for me. Slow, and no-go. Of course, I’ll let them in if they’re trying to get to an exit, but that’s the extent of my tolerance on the road.

I never feel comfortable with a vehicle on my left, but I will do it. If I had enough room to go by, they had enough room to move over...

That’s where the grey area of ‘general assholery’ comes in, I’m a lot more aggressive about it; if they’re not moving as soon as the car before them clears the intersection I’m going. Hmmm, typing it out does sound a bit dickish lol, which might explain the few ‘wtf’ hands-thrown-up from people who have started to go when I’m already halfway into the intersection. I’m a perfectly safe and reasonable driver otherwise, but for some reason people farting around at intersections really grinds my gears.

If there is room to pass on the right? meh. So do I. If there was enough room to go by there was enough for you to move over...

120-130km/h in a 100 for me. The road is good for it, the limits are artificially low and if you don’t you are “that asshole holding up traffic”. I’ll leave judgement to oppo.

Agreed. However, I would say if you had time to do your stop, or whatever passes as a stop (up here there are some areas where, if you do stop, you are the dangerous one. Everyone in those areas rolls stops unless there’s a cop, and it works because everone does it.) and they still haven’t moved, I’d say they’re fair game. The fact that I choose to give tham more leeway and you choose not to is personal preference.

I have no sympathy for queue jumpers... unless they’re a family from out of state who presumably just didn’t realize where the line was going. But only a family; a single driver is not getting let in no matter how hard they try.

This might seem normal, at least to an extent, but I really mean I will never give in. Even if they’re merging on top of me, it becomes a game of chicken. They’ll hit me before I give them space. (Okay, I’d probably move over at the last second... Still, I’ve let some people get within inches of me before.)

I’m exactly the opposite. Although I don’t do the polite “Oh, no, please go ahead!” wave. I flash my brights non-stop while glaring at them until they get the message. I can’t stand people who don’t understand right-of-way.

I’m going to assume you mean the guys who jump into a merge lane to get ahead.

No, not an asshole. The asshole is the queue jumper, and I have to admit I do it sometimes... I hereby submit myself to the wrath of oppo.

On the other hand, if it’s a situation like #3 on this...

http://oppositelock.kinja.com/so-we-havent-d…

F*ck you, I’m outrunning you if I can. If I can’t, or can’t without going all out, I’ll gladly get behind, as I know you won’t hold me up.

When driving on residential streets and an oncoming car does not yield (or does not look like they are going to yield) to cars or other obstacles that are on their side of the street, I make it impossible/extremely uncomfortable for them to squeeze between me and the obstacle. I’m not a total asshole, I wont do this on streets that are wide enough for two cars + parked cars etc.

Not an asshole unless you make it dangerous, or do it on wide roads. In my opinion at least, forcing someone to stay where they belong is a reasonable precaution against an accident. If there isn’t enough room and they look like they are trying to come through anyway, blocking the passage so they have to yield is better than clicking mirrors or worse

Since you live in the Detroit area that is more like doing 89 in an 85.

Well I drive back and forth across the state a lot, but yea Detroit is pretty speedy. Especially considering a couple of the highways are 55mph, which would block traffic in ANY lane.

lol it’s true. As of last Saturday I’m actually an Audi driver! Not that there is a huge difference there.

No matter how fast I’ve driven down there I’ve been passed. Even the time I was running late getting back to the airport and driving [redacted]. When I saw the headlights coming up FAST I thought for sure I was getting arrested for reckless driving. Nope, just another guy in a bigger hurry than I was.

What determines a “jump in front”? I frequently (read: every day) use an HOV lane that is open to everyone during the time I am driving and where the lane comes to an end it is frequently backed up. You can bet your ass I’m staying in my lane until it ends.

If your lane ends, no shit you should stay in it. I’m talking about people who cut into a backed up turn lane when their straight lane is free. Those guys can and should miss their turn and find another way.
